Built in 1891, the Pink Palace was originally a Gentleman's Club and Casino for the elite residents of the Court…..and it wasn’t pink. After dinner, the gentlemen of the neighborhood and surrounding areas would make their way to this iconic home to enjoy their whiskey, their gambling, and possible the attention from a lady or two that was NOT their wives.
As you can imagine, the well-to-do women of the neighborhood were understandably offended. Victorian culture was pretty buttoned up, and this kind of behavior wasn’t very becoming of the upscale, elite neighborhood that this grand neighborhood was striving to become. Within a few years, the ladies of Saint James court had banded together to purchased the building, established a temperance union centered around Christian values, and painted the structure its signature blushing hue to signify to everyone no unruly activities would be welcome in the area any longer.
Now, under the protection of the historic district it stands in, the building must remain pink to adhere to the guidelines regarding its historical significance. With its stunning pink facade and intricate architecture, the Pink Palace is a must-see stop on your Gateway Tours walking adventure.
